Driving licence info

There is some duplication now between the Driving Licence and Visiting the UK sections - would be good to consolidate!

Also, that old pre-brexit PDF is full of information about the EU, not sure if it's a good source. The current source seems to be this, but unfortunately it's very thin on information, and also has been incorrect for years (asking "Where did you pass your test?" instead of "Which country issued your licence?"). -Adamu (talk) 14:57, 4 June 2021 (JST)

Agree. Consolidated. Driving Licence section now concentrates on exchanging GB licence to Japanese. Visiting the UK section now contains the consolidated info on driving in the UK as a visitor.
Also, agree that this is very light on information in the case we are interested in. The DVLA does not appear to publish much clear information on the matter.
Although pre-Brexit, the PDF from the DVLA has clear information on rules about driving in GB as a visitor on licences from 'designated countries' (including detail such as max weight and max no. of seats of vehicle). Since such rules have not to my knowledge been supplanted, and since the information is presented very clearly and from an authoritative source, I've retained the link but noted the pre-Brexit nature of the source. Let's look out for any new publications from the DVLA, and update when available.
Incidentally, I have hired cars and driven in the UK on my Japanese licence. I obtained an International Driving Permit from my local Japanese licence office as a back-up. I've noted that although the IDP serves as a translation of the Japanese licence, it does not translate the expiry date of the licence. This is less of an issue now that Japanese licences display the expiry date in Gregorian years.

Surnames in Japan

Kuma, thanks for adding the info about surnames! There doesn't seem to be anything there that specifically relates to it being in the UK article. Maybe Getting married in Japan would be a better place for it? -Adamu (talk) 12:42, 12 August 2021 (JST)

Agree. Will fix shortly.

Non-resident bank account

In response to this added text:

require a linked UK bank account, which may be difficult for Japan-resident individuals to gain or retain

I didn't try it yet, but Wise offers multi-currency accounts for residents of Japan. The GBP account comes with a sort-code/account number that could work. -Adamu (talk) 21:30, 1 September 2021 (JST)

Indeed it does. I've adapted the above sentence and started a (sparse) section on UK bank accounts. Kuma (talk) 04:45, 2 September 2021 (JST)

Pension payment instructions

The Making Payments section seems to be a verbatim copy of the physical letter that HMRC sends. Originally I didn't include this information, under the reasoning that it's not of much use to people that don't have the letter, and people that have the letter already have the information - plus it is subject to change. But I suppose it's good for the curious, or for people that have lost the letter. It is a bit verbose though, and takes up quite a bit of space. I'm trying to work out if we can clarify it, or maybe move it to a sub-page. Thoughts? -Adamu (talk) 10:50, 9 September 2021 (JST)

Had a go at condensing/clarifying. -Adamu (talk) 11:16, 9 September 2021 (JST)
Great stuff. Simple is good, and that table simplifies things. The state pension section is growing, and could in the future have some of the info transferred to a sub-page, but front and centre seems good for now while the wiki is young and while questions on this topic keep popping up on the RJ forum. -Kuma (talk) 14:25, 11 September 2021 (JST)
